Dr. John Michael

Faculty Advisor

I have been the faculty advisor of Cornell Global Medical Mission Alliance since 2019. It has been a privilege to support students who are dedicated to fulfilling the to fulfill the Great Commission of Jesus Christ both locally and abroad. After living in India and the US for many years, I have become more attuned to the unique fulfillment of the Great Commission of Jesus Christ in different parts of the world. While I feel that the Lord has personally called me to focus on Matthew 28:20 “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you…” (ESV), I am called to encourage and support others who fulfill the other parts of the Great Commission specified in Matthew 28:19 “Go ..and make disciples of all nations…”

GMMA is not only a chance to grow a heart for the nations and God’s kingdom, but also an opportunity for accountability with brothers and sisters in Christ. As Christians we’re called to live missional lives even if we aren’t overseas missionaries. I’m thankful that I can grow with peers and mentors in GMMA who encourage me to persevere even when times are rough. It’s so easy to be self-centered, but God reminds me again and again to look to him and surrender everything to his better, bigger picture. I pray that God would continue to grow me in humility, servitude, and love for him and his people. I pray for the souls of the unreached and the lost. I pray that God would send his people to preach to them so that they would hear and believe in the amazing Gospel.

“GMMA is a family provided by God for me to grow alongside in spirit and prayer. While all of the members are scattered throughout not just America, but the globe, I think it really is a blessing to be able to have fellowship with so many loving brothers and sisters. Beyond the peers I meet, who are so encouraging and willing to keep each other accountable, there are such wonderful mentors who truly look out for us spiritually, physically, and emotionally. The amount of support and love I have received from God through GMMA really makes me have a humbled heart of realizing not only how lacking I am as a servant, but how much harder I should work to remain disciplined, faithful, and loving to those around me.”

“To me, GMMA is a family of believers seeking to respond to Christ’s calling with their whole lives. Serving with GMMA has given me the conviction to let God’s love consume my career aspirations and relationships. While I’ve always wanted to study medicine, GMMA challenges me to be a physician the way Jesus is, not just of physical bodies but of hearts that are desperately sick and in need. Christ calls us to greater healing, and as we become equipped with the Word I hope our chapter will become a bright light to our campus that breathes life into those who need it. Working with the mentors and spending time in fellowship made me realize how GMMA is also a sign of the Lord’s faithfulness in my life, as He lovingly shepherds me through my college experience. I am excited to see how the Lord uses everyone’s unique talents to glorify His name!”

GMMA is wonderful opportunity for accountability with my brothers and sisters. I’ve always been timid with sharing my faith, but I’ve seen God’s grace and have seen the blessings that come with following his call. I want to share to others what God’s love means to me. Hearing from different mentors and partaking in various fellowships made me realize that we are called to be vessels of the Lord, and I think GMMA is a great way to inspire others to grow in Christ. I pray that I continue to have the spiritual desire in serving our Lord and spreading his message. Ultimately, GMMA is a community where I feel that I can grow in faith and spread love to my brothers and sisters.

To me, GMMA is an encouragement and reminder of what it means to live out my faith. I learn more and more each week about how much God has a heart for the lost. I am encouraged to pray for the nations, different chapters across the US, and for our chapter. I am increasingly convinced and convicted that we are called to lead missional lives–and how much I need to be relying on God’s grace to share the Gospel.

I love how open and welcoming GMMA is to everyone, and we’re all rooted in the same goal of spreading the hope of the gospel! I am so encouraged every time I’m with this community and the urgency I’m reminded of to live everyday in a missional mindset!”

GMMA is a family of brothers and sisters that is united in our pursuit to reflect and share the love of Christ, whether it be abroad or in our own campuses and communities. GMMA has been such a blessing in my life in teaching me what it really means to obey Jesus’ call to be a witness and how healthcare can be a means through which we can love God and His people. I have also been so encouraged to be running this race alongside loving and dedicated members and mentors who continually point each other back to Christ in all things and emphasize the importance of prayer. I can see how God is working to transform our hearts to experience how great a joy and privilege it is to lift up our lives for His glory alone. I pray that God would be the one to sustain and lead Cornell GMMA to grow and become a pointer to Christ!”
