GMMA July 2023 Monthly Newsletter

MID-YEAR PRESIDENT’S GREETING

With excitement, we welcome another academic year for GMMA campus chapters. It is truly a testament of the moving of God as I see so many campus chapters with dedicated students striving to live a missional life for Christ. As an update, recently we convened for a spirit-filled West regional officers’ retreat. Praise God for the mighty work he is doing in everyone’s heart. There was an overwhelming strong unified commitment to faith and spiritual discipline among the attending officers. I have no doubt we will witness the same blessing of our gracious God as we continue with the Central, Southeast, and Northeast regional leadership retreats in the next few weeks.

It was wonderful to witness the officers planning to implement GMMA core disciplines across all the chapters in order to encourage and build strong spiritual fellowship. It confirmed the acknowledgment that Words, Prayer, Witness, and Mission training are essential aspects of Christ-centered discipleship. This unified approach of the disciplines can strengthen the regional ministry and GMMA as a whole.

To me, prayer is a cornerstone for spiritual growth and ministry effectiveness. Our emphasis on spending more time together in prayer and executing monthly prayer meetings for all GMMA nations is vital. It is the fuel that keeps GMMA to be Christ-centered and what will continue to impact GMMA’s overall positive growth and health.

It is so thankful that God has blessed GMMA family with a mission of “Living out Christ-Centered missional life.” This foundation keeps all of us securely anchored in following the ways of Christ. By embracing this mission collectively, the GMMA community can make a significant impact in respective communities and the world at large. We all know the saying, “Actions speak louder than words.” I am overwhelmingly encouraged to see how you all are trying to live this out as I travel and attend GMMA training and retreats! Thank You!

In closing, know that I am constantly praying for you all and I wish all GMMA leaders the best as we embark on the new academic year with renewed dedication to your spiritual journey and mission. As always the GMMA staff is here to support you all so please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions. I look forward to continuing to work and pray with you all. May you continue to find blessed fellowship, growth, and fulfillment in everything that you do.

Sincerely,
Dr. Peter Chung Sr. MD
GMMA President

Professional Development

Another busy month of lots of preparation and execution of two very important events for July.
The weekend of July 8th was the LTM- LongTermMissionary group’s retreat in Colorado. It was hosted at the beautiful home of Dr. Chuck and Dr. Eunice. It was a blessing to learn that they customized their home to host such meetings! The other meeting was the Leadership Retreat for the west coast region during the weekend of July 22 in California. Both events took lots of prayers and planning by many dedicated members. The events displayed beautiful collaborative teamwork of professionals, postgrads, and students. Whether it was making curry lunch for 80 people or leading the praise songs, we witnessed multi-generations serving together.  Some mentors served as speakers and delivered great sharings on helpful topics like Servant Leadership, Spiritual Breakthrough, and Power of Prayer.  It provided attendees with a time of reflection, repentance, restoration, refocusing, and realignment to the ways of God.  It included much laughter and great fellowship time as well.  We give all the glory and honor to our good God who blessed the gatherings that provided time set apart to be better equipped to live out Christ-centered missional lives.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith…” Hebrews 12:1-2

Mission Report

MISSION UPDATE

June 17-22nd 2023 Honduras Team

GMMA teams were blessed with opportunities to serve in the areas of medical clinics, community development, and children’s ministry. As the regular Honduras teachers were on a short break, GMMA team members all helped out teaching at the school on the Honduras mission base compound.  The children of the school got to know the team members better as they spent more time together in and out of the classroom.  GMMA teams prepare quite a bit for the five days trip. For Children’s ministry, the team prepares several drama skits, body worship pieces, crafts, and games for the purpose of sharing about the love of Christ. For this trip, there was a request from the students to learn some Korean language influenced by the growing popularity of KPOP, so they prepared some lessons.  It’s a beautiful sight full of lots of laughter and interaction.

Clinically, Dr. S Choi (OBGYN) provided services for women; public safety talk/Q&A as well as exams and consultation. It was really appreciated. The students were able to shadow and assist in various parts of the clinic execution. We are always thankful for local translators who help our teams.

We prepare and go to bless the people of Honduras and also to encourage and support missionary Lee, but members often express they receive so much more blessing through the trip. Not only through the interaction with the locals, but also through the interaction within the team whether it’s through the morning QT discussions or worshipping and praying together in the evening, they all feel closer to God and to each other. We thank the Lord for His faithful provision for each mission trip! It’s quite amazing when we think about it.

“The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Regional Health Reports

West Coast

Praise Reports:
As the chapters transitioned their board, we want to bring praise for everyone’s faithfulness and willingness to serve. Praise God for providing our west coast chapters Christ-centered students and their dedication towards their respective chapters. As GMMA held the first national prayer meeting of the new year, we had over 100 students of our chapters show up to have a time of praise and worship together. Praise God for safely bringing back our students from the Honduras mission trip in June and him blessing the hearts of our students and the local communities. As the school year approaches, I am excited to see how God is able to use our students to further glorify his kingdom.

Needs:
Although we have really faithful new board members, some chapters still need more spots to be filled, especially those in particular who are having a difficult time. During our upcoming West Coast Leadership Retreat, I hope that all our students are adequately trained to become servant leaders for God in their respective chapters and have a time of fellowship with new members from different chapters.

Regional Coordinator:
“But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.” (2 Peter 3: 8-10)

As Christians, we must understand the urgency of the second coming of our savior Jesus Christ which no one will ever know the exact date and time. He is patient in giving his children the opportunity to know him and love him before the second coming. Through our mission trips, we have the opportunity to share the gospel to the unreached and to show how much God loves his children so much that he sacrificed his only son to die on the cross for our sins. During this upcoming school year, I pray for all our students and mentors to be blessed with the Holy Spirit when spreading the gospel to the unreached.

CENTRAL

Praise Reports:
Central region has already been having multiple prayer meetings along with fellowship gatherings throughout the region. Praise God that officers from different chapters such as Texas A&M, University of Texas, and University of Texas at Dallas, have already implemented new ways of being intentional in each other’s lives. Please pray that God may continue to use these officers as a light in not just GMMA but in their everyday life.

Needs:
As our students are currently preparing for the upcoming central region leadership retreat, please keep the officers in your prayers as they start preparing for the upcoming school year. In terms of additional needs, please also pray that God may provide mentors for the central region chapters.

Regional Coordinator:
“For this could have been sold for a large sum and given to the poor.” But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me. For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.” (Mathew 26: 9-11)

Father, I ask that as we begin this upcoming school year, may you allow us to rest knowing that we are yours and you are ours. That before any of the planning or the mission trips that you may come and fill our hearts with your spirit. We invite you to come make your home in our lives. Help us to live a life that is pleasing to you.

EAST COAST

Praise Reports:
This month, our region had our first monthly president’s meetings of the year with the new regional coordinators and presidents. We are thankful that God provided us with faithful and willing brothers and sisters to serve with and are excited to witness how He will work in and through each one of us. There was also an RC retreat/fellowship in California after the Postgrad retreat. We are grateful that we were able to spend time together, fellowshipping and planning for the upcoming year. Please pray that God will continuously fill every regional coordinator and officer with joy, love, and humility as we serve together.

Needs:
This year our region has two leadership retreats coming up. Our Georgia/Florida retreat will be on 8/11-13 in Atlanta, GA, and our Northeast/Canada retreat will be on 8/18-20 in Queens, NY. Please pray that God will be glorified and pleased with our worship, prayers, and conversations. Please pray that the Holy Spirit will move powerfully and pour into each student throughout the retreat. Lastly, please pray for the preparation process- for everything we plan and do to be led by God.

Regional Coordinator:

“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58)

Father God, please help us to give ourselves fully to You. We want to serve You wholeheartedly, humbly, and joyfully. Would You fill our hearts with joy and humility? Would You help us to stand firm in You and solely depend on You in all circumstances?

CANADA

Praise Reports:
Praise God for all that He has done, all that He is doing, and all that He will do in GMMA Canada! We are so thankful for how God has used our graduating officers to bless our student chapters. It is through these individuals that God is really moving and inspiring our next generation of Christ followers and we pray that God would continue to use them to bless others as they move forward to the next chapter of their lives!

Needs:
With all three of the previous Canadian presidents stepping down, God has provided three new leaders who are stepping up to lead their chapters. Please join me in welcoming and praying for our new presidents: Noah (Western University), Christine (Toronto universities), and Hannah (McMaster University)! Please pray to our Father that He would continually remind them that they are not alone in this journey and that they would learn to rely not on themselves, but on Him! Please also pray for the upcoming East Coast + Canada officer leadership retreat (August 18-20) that our RCs are currently preparing for!

Regional Coordinator:

“But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility” (Ephesians 2:13-14)

These days I can really feel how polarizing our Christian faith is to the world. Yet, despite our position, Jesus has “broken down” the “dividing wall of hostility” and draws all towards Him. When I’m with my GMMA family, I really get to experience this kind of unity, as a body of Christ. So I really encourage all our students and mentors to live out our roles as peacemakers and point others towards Him who is our peace!
